La ciudad de Chiang Rai (carente de encanto y de interés de ningún tipo) es la puerta del "Triángulo del Oro" (o del opio, la zona mas al Norte de Tailandia limítrofe con Laos y Birmania. Esta zona se caracteriza por su vegetación selvática (bosques de teka) combinada con enormes campos de arroz, por ser una zona completamente abierta a las influencias de los países limítrofes (sobre todo de china) y por sus "tribus" de las montañas (visita no recomendable es una atractivo "artificial" que intentan vender a los turistas sin en el menor interés).
